Garnets include an extensive group of nesosilicates which share a chemical formula. Miscibilities can be detected between the different species. This mineral is part of the cubic system and has a hardness of 7-7.5 on the Mohs scale.
The name hessonite comes from Greek and means "inferior" deriving from the fact that, in the past, it was mistakenly lumped together with zircon with the name "hyacinth" and that hessonite has a lower hardness than zircon. Hessonite is a subvariety of grossular and has an orange-brown color and in the most commercially appreciated qualities with a lively note reminiscent of honey.
