The origin of the word corundum is attributed to the ancient Sanskrit "kuruvinda" whose meaning would be "very hard stone". Corundum crystallizes in the trigonal system, its crystalline habit is prismatic or bipyramidal. This is an allochromatic mineral, that is, if it is found pure, it is colorless. Its chemical composition derives from aluminum oxides (Al2O3)
Sapphire, whose name derives from the Greek “sappheiros” means blue. In this case the color is due to iron-titanium charge transfers.
