The name chrysoberyl comes from the Greek terms Khrysos which means gold and beryllos which means beryl. It is found in pegmatitic veins and in metamorphic rocks. Chrysoberyl is a stable mineral, no reactions to heating are known, or changes to exposure to atmospheric agents. One of its characteristics is that of having three cleavage points. The most well-known places where it is found are Brazil, Madagascar and Sri Lanka. The acid green and brown varieties owe their colors to iron ions in octahedral coordination.
