Fire agate is a variety of quartz from Mexico. It was formed in places subject to massive volcanic activity, during which hot water saturated with silica and iron oxide filled cracks and bubbles in the rock.
This type of material has iridescent colors of green, red and blue, very similar to opal. The iridescence is caused by the alternating layers of silica and iron oxide, which allow light to form the color interference within the microstructure of the mineral.
